Referral guide for clinicians

Refer a family to The Regulated Table™

When a feeding recommendation isn't landing, the question isn't which recommendation to try next. It's what conditions are making the current one hard to use. That is where an OT feeding lens comes in.

Primary focus: children 0–7. Children up to 12 can book a fit consult or comprehensive feeding assessment. Virtual sessions for families in every Canadian province except Quebec; not available in the territories. No physician referral or diagnosis required.

When to refer

Refer when nutrition or medical guidance is appropriate but implementation stays stuck, and you see one or more of these:

  • Fewer than 20 accepted foods, or a repertoire that keeps narrowing
  • Mealtime meltdowns, gagging, or vomiting
  • Sensory-driven food refusal
  • Caregiver exhaustion or conflict around feeding
  • ARFID or pediatric feeding disorder with sensory or regulatory drivers
  • Autism or ADHD with feeding restriction
  • Feeding aversion after NICU or tube feeding
  • Infant feeding transition difficulties, 0–18 months

Match the need to the pathway

You don't need to know which service fits. Use this as a guide, or refer and let the fit consult sort it out.

How to explain the referral to a family

Families often ask why they're seeing an OT for eating. You can say:

"An occupational therapist looks at what makes eating hard for your child's body: how they process taste and texture, their feeding skills, and how settled their nervous system is at meals. The ITS team works with you to change the conditions around mealtimes so the plan we already have can actually work."
